From yesterday morning, all through last night and into this afternoon I worked on a huge additive software synthesizer with a wireless iPad based guitar-style controller. This evening I demonstrated my project to an auditorium of eager music aficionados and it seemed to go down pretty well with them. Fortunately for me it also went down well with the judges, and I won what the festival organiser described as the Hack Camp’s grand prize - the Cisco Award for Best New Musical Instrument.

Considering I was sleep-deprived and highly nervous when giving my demonstration, I’m damn pleased with this result. Score!

The Princess Mononoke stage adaptation has opened in London to sell-out performances and rave reviews. The play’s puppets and costumes are made out of recycled material, reflecting Miyazaki’s environmental message.

After a successful UK premiere and a short run in Tokyo, Whole Hog Theatre’s stage version of Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke will return to London’s New Diorama Theatre next month due to “unprecedented demand.” The production is a collaboration between the British theatre troupe and Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli and features large scale puppetry and a recreation of Joe Hisaishi’s original film score

Now, I don’t usually use tumblr anymore, but seeing as it’s all over the place here:
Since January I have been playing the role of Ashitaka in Wholehog Theatre’s stage play of Princess Mononoke.
We’ve currently completed two runs, one in London and one in Tokyo, Japan.
Both were beautifully received, the latter even more so!

We’re due to return to London for a two week run from the 18th of June, sadly the tickets sold out in under 4 hours for this run, but if you’re super lucky and don’t mind waiting around, there’s a chance a couple of seats might be available each night.

Anyway, this project has been an utter joy to be a part of and lead the cast and crew to meeting Miyazaki himself, and we were even lucky enough to be taken on a tour around the actual studios.
The cast and crew are bloody amazing, and all of us are dedicated and really believe in the work that we’re producing.
Hopefully we’ll make it across the seas with this beautifully faithful production again soon…

This actually seems like a really cool production! I was wondering how they would make it work, but using puppetry on stage, like the Broadway adaptation of The Lion King, is a pretty legit way of doing it. I’m hoping that this show is a success and can one day come over to the U.S. I would watch the hell out of this play!

I try to dig deep into the well of my subconscious. At a certain moment in that process, the lid is opened and very different ideas and visions are liberated. With those I can start making a film. But maybe it’s better that you don’t open that lid completely, because if you release your subconscious it becomes really hard to live a social or family life.
